Demand of the Market

Sobeys must continue to meet the demands of the market. As Paul Sobey stated in a rare 1969 interview, "When you are in business, you can either create growth or go stagnate. You can't stay still." And those words couldn't ring more or true in today's competitive environment where supermarkets continue to lose a share of foods sales to general merchandisers. Sobey's celebration of over 100 years in business is due not only to their products, services, and customer relationships but also to their ability to grow and the company's use of a diverse and effective promotional mix.

Sobeys Strategy

In 2008 Sobeys created a strategy to provide healthy food alternatives for children with the launch of Compliments Junior Disney Kids, a food line just for children. "With childhood obesity on the rise, what our kids are eating is of even greater concern than it was in the past" said Scott Cooper, vice president of consumer marketing and location planning, corporate brands, Sobeys, Inc., "At the same time, we know parents are busier than ever, so we want to make it as easy as possible for them to prepare nutritious, delicious meals for their families they can be proud of.

Sobeys Introduced "Green Bag for Life"

Late in 2006 Sobeys introduced the reusable grocery bad "Green Bag for Life" in an effort to help protect the environment. The company also initiated proper in-store  training for cashiers to reduce the use of traditional plastic grocery bags by 20 percent by adding one more item to the average customer's shopping bag. To increase its environmental efforts, Sobeys in Ontario also provided in-store bag recycling, added recycled content to plastic bags, and used stickers as a proof of purchase on larger items to reduce the use of bags. In May 2009 Sobeys implemented a 5-cent fee to a plastic and paper bags to encourage its customers to support reusable options.
